1. Introduction
Acupuncture is an ancient form of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), in which acupuncture needles are inserted into the body to achieve the desired therapeutic effect [1]. It is believed that acupuncture originated in China. For thousands of years they have observed the remarkable clinical use of acupuncture. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), acupuncture has been shown to be an effective or complementary treatment for 28 diseases, symptoms, or conditions [2]. In daily practice, clinical use of acupuncture is greatly increased with these diseases. In addition, acupuncture is suitable for many, regardless of their physical condition, with little or no effect. Despite the long history and widespread use of acupuncture, there are still some challenges to reaching consensus. The effectiveness of acupuncture remains a topic of discussion. Other studies, which include randomized controlled trials (RCTs), have suggested that acupuncture is no more than placebo-based [3 - 5]. Besides, how acupuncture works and the mechanisms behind it are still unclear. Meridian theory plays a strong role in directing the practice of acupuncture and is the basis of TCM science. However, as of now, the anatomy of the meridians has not been explained in detail [6]. Acupuncture also has the feature of TCM treatment based on the diagnosis of the disease. By selecting different acupoints and changing the deception of the system, a unique, but unique clinical result, will be given each time. Therefore, it is increasingly necessary to discontinue acupuncture treatment [7]. These challenges are therefore important roadblocks that hinder the development of acupuncture. Nanotechnology is the engineering of materials of at least one size from 1 to 100 nm used technically or scientifically [9]. In 1959, Richard Feynman, regarded as the father of nanotechnology, introduced the famous discourse entitled "There's Plenty of Room at the Bottom" and introduced the idea of ​​converting atoms and molecules into nanoscale machines [10]. The term "nanotechnology" was first used by Norio Taniguchi in 1974 [11]. Since then, this growing field has undergone major changes and is now being used in a variety of fields including nanomedicine, nanoelectronics, biomaterials, energy production, and information technology. The ingenuity of nanotechnology lies in the size of nanoparticles. Reducing the size of the structure at the nanoscale results in completely different structures, such as unique applications in fields such as chemistry, photology, electronics, and magnetism [12 - 14]. Thanks to these attractive structures, nanoparticles are widely used in living things such as biomarkers, imaging, and biosensors. These applications have laid the foundation for developing acupuncture techniques and developing acupuncture needles. This review will attempt to highlight the potential uses and power of nanotechnology in acupuncture, as shown in Figure.
